ITINERARY PLANNING
Gather information and get your gorilla-viewing permits from the ORTPN. It is sensible not to rush off to the gorillas immediately; take a few days to get the feel of the country and to acclimatize, because the trek can be quite strenuous and the altitude can catch you unawares.
The best map available outside Rwanda is currently Rwanda and Burundi, scale 1:400,000 published in Canada by International Travel Maps (www.itb.com). There is also Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, scale 1:500,000, published by Nelles Guides & Maps (www.nelles-verlag.de). ORTPN sells a tourist map of Rwanda.
All GPS readings in this guide are taken with Map Datum set to ‘Cape’.
Bear in mind that some towns have been renamed following the administrative reorganisation of provinces in early 2006. At the time of writing, Butare has become Huye and Ruhengeri has become Musanze; more changes seem likely to follow.
Useful websites for information on Rwanda are www.rwandatourism.com/ www.ambarwanda.org.uk (of the Rwandan Embassy in London), all of which give relevant address and contact details and have numerous links. For all-purpose information there is www.rwandagateway.org; and good sites for current news are www.allafrica.com and www.newtimes.co.rw. Finally, www.rwandaphonebook.com is a kind of condensed Yellow Pages, giving phone numbers for hotels, restaurants, business etc.
The international country telephone code for Rwanda is 250. There is no area codes.
